The Gelato Federation, also known as Gelato, is working to develop scalable, commodity software to enable researchers to advance their studies in developing and technology-intensive areas, such as life sciences and physical sciences. Gelato invites participation from all interested organizations.

Co-founded by HP and seven of the world's leading research institutions, Gelato is launching an open source community initiative designed to foster the development and dissemination of focused computing solutions for researchers and associated IT staffs working on the Itanium Linux platform. Gelato will provide the research community with software downloads, including new solutions developed by Gelato member institutions and by other contributors from the greater open source community.

Gelato currently has six focus areas:
    • Compilers
    • Parallel file systems
    • Performance monitoring in a box
    • Performance monitoring in a cluster
    • Scalability in a box
    • Scalability in a cluster
Within these areas, Gelato is looking for ways to apply new technology and solutions to specific applications in bioinformatics, high-energy physics, and atmospheric sciences, in direct response to members' interests and needs. Read more (pdf) about some of the Gelato members' current projects.

Gelato also will supply information services – such as forums and technical data – to make the Itanium Linux platform more accessible to researchers and their support staffs.

The Gelato portal is dedicated to providing the IA-64 Linux community with the most current and usefule resources for runnung Linux on the Itanium (IA-64) platform.

If you have a bioinformatics software project that runs on the Intel Itanium platform, please post a message about it on their website. And, if you would like to see a certain bioinformatics program ported to Itanium, add it to the ``Wishlist''.
