    BioNeeds: Bioinformatics Needs Assessment Group

Dan Bolser has begun a project to assess the potential needs of experimentalists who have a wide range of bioinformatics knowledge. ``Ideally,'' he says, ``I would like to capture both what is currently being used and what would be really useful if it were being used.''

Dan recently gathered information and some pre-existing forms from contributors and created a website and FTP repository. Says Dan, ``This questionnaire is designed to fulfill two different functions related to gathering information on the use of bioinformatics in your lab.

``Firstly, it aims to get an overview of the bioinformatics tools and databases routinely used in your lab.

``Secondly, it aims to find out what kinds of bioinformatics tools and databases that researchers would like to use. For example, those services which researchers think could be of potential benefit.

``Finally, in this secondary aim, we would like to get information about tasks which can be helped by bioinformatics, but for which a lack of knowledge about available tools and databases means that people don't even know that there is a simpler way.''
