Opportunity: Postdoc Position, advanced GENETIC analysis--Wageningen (the Netherlands)
Submitted by Jaap Buntjer; posted on Friday, June 24, 2005

    BACKGROUND

Keygene is a biotechnological company that carries out innovative research to advance commercial breeding by using a number of proprietary genetic technologies and know-how. To expedite creation of new varieties by its customers, Keygene's main focus is the analysis, creation and exploitation of genetic variation.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
You will be working in the program advanced genetic analysis at the bioinformatics department with the aim to enhance and broaden our quantitative genetics research line. Topics of interest: QTL mapping in complex populations, QTL interaction and dissection of phenotypic components. More general, the research encompasses complex data anaysis and visualization for genotyping to support plant breeding. Within these themes, we expect you to define your own plan of approach to develop and implement innovative preliminary methodologies and prove-of-concepts tools. Derived methods and tools will be implemented by our professional software developers to make these available for use within the research programs of the upstream and applied research departments.

    REQUIREMENTS:
You have a strong vision of (plant)genetics and we welcome the candidate to formulate the details of his/her own research plan. You have a thorough knowledge of the principles of (marker)genotyping, qtl maping and phenotypic data analysis. Although you are able to think in abstract frameworks, you have a clear interest in practical problems in plant breeding and you are motivated to create applicable solutions. You are able to apply methods in data analysis and visualization yourself but you also have the communicative skills to explain methods to the "wet research" side of the laboratory. You have good knowledge of statistics and you are familiar with scripts in statistical environments like R and genstat. Programming skills will be an advantage but are not strictly required. You are enthusiastic and entrepeneurial.

    PREFERENCES

You will participate in our postdoctoral program. This program provides scientifically interesting topics and a thorough base for individual training and development to prepare for a biotechnological and/or academic career. In your day-to-day work you will be coached by a mentor. This program offers you possibilities to write patents and scientifc publications, visit seminars, give presentations and to gain experience in a commercial environment
