Hey Steve-

I realized I babbled without specifically answering your question...

A reasonable (free) approach would be to go with GridEngine on RedHat 
and use the 'qrsh' command to execute your blast jobs. I've only done 
one GridEngine install so far (my writeup of that experience is online 
at http://bioteam.net/dag/biocluster-diary-1/) but my impression and 
experiences with the product have been very positive.
