While I'm not keen on content moderation -- if people are rude let them reap their own reward -- it's been my experience that mailing lists, even seemingly obscure ones, are indeed targets for spam over and above the hundreds-per-day flux received by any stable email address. No purely automated system can cope effectively, and I've seen several useful lists destroyed their owners' reluctance to moderate. Closing the list to postings by nonmembers is a partial solution; it hasn't been my experience that email spoofing is rare either. So while I would prefer a policy of no content alteration or suppression by a moderator, I see no practical alternative to having one and accepting the delays.
