FANTASTIC! This is the sort of thing that really works with middle school students... please more of this. -----Original Message----- From: molvis-list-bounces at bioinformatics.org [mailto:molvis-list-bounces at bioinformatics.org]On Behalf Of Eric Martz Sent: den 7 december 2004 18:56 To: molvis-list at bioinformatics.org Cc: tatkins at commspeed.net; helen at k12s.phast.umass.edu; jmr49 at cvip.net; mort at umassk12.net; flammer2 at pacbell.net Subject: [Molvis-list] DNA jewelry At a recent workshop for local teachers, someone pointed out a wonderful K-12 lesson plan with detailed instructions for constructing DNA double helix earrings with jewelry beads. I have added the site to http://molvisindex.org in the K-12 category. Direct link: http://molvis.sdsc.edu/visres/k12/titles.jsp where you will see a photo of one finished product. Description: Students build short segments (about 10 base pairs) of DNA using jewelry beads, becoming intimately involved in DNA structure. The kinesthetic experience and durable product combine to make a lasting impression, and something useful deeply learned about a seemingly complex topic. Middle school students, high school students, and teachers in our workshops have all successfully constructed the molecule. They reinvent the process and make wonderful embellishments. Includes detailed lesson plans, a source for beads, and step-by-step photos for construction. /* - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Protein Explorer - 3D Visualization: http://proteinexplorer.org Workshops: http://www.umass.edu/molvis/workshop Biochem Structure Tutorials http://MolviZ.org World Index of Molecular Visualization Resources: http://molvisindex.org ConSurf - Find Conserved Patches in Proteins: http://consurf.tau.ac.il Atlas of Macromolecules: http://molvis.sdsc.edu/atlas/atlas.htm PDB Lite Macromolecule Finder: http://pdblite.org Molecular Visualization EMail List (molvis-list): http://bioinformatics.org/mailman/listinfo/molvis-list Eric Martz, Professor Emeritus, Dept Microbiology U Mass, Amherst MA US 413-545-2325/FAX 413-545-2532 http://www.umass.edu/molvis/martz - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - */ _______________________________________________ Molvis-list mailing list Molvis-list at bioinformatics.org https://bioinformatics.org/mailman/listinfo/molvis-list
