A new version of FirstGlance in Jmol (http://firstglance.jmol.org) has been released. FirstGlance in Jmol can display any PDB file that is online. Nothing need be installed beforehand (except possibly a quick and painless java upgrade via http://java.com), and it works in popular browsers and platforms including MSIE on Windows, Safari or Firefox on Mac OSX, and Firefox on linux. Starting with the February 2006 issue, Nature Structural and Molecular Biology has "3D View" links to display new structures in FirstGlance in Jmol. http://www.nature.com/nsmb/ An editorial in the February 2006 issue, entitled "We're living in a 3D world", introduces this new feature. Changes: The initial molecular view now shows ligands and disulfide bonds by default, and has a checkbox (under "More Views.." or "Ligands+") to highlight non-standard amino acids or nucleotides. Clicking on an atom now produces a large, clear identification report (rather than centering on that atom, as in the previous version). There is a new atom centering dialog, with better controls.
