Well, bioinformatics is multidisciplinary science, invloving just about all of
the allied fields of comp sci, biology, chemistry, physics, math and
engineering.  It's about as 'cutting edge' as you can get.

But the word is simply the combination of the 2 words...

    biology + informatics

and literally means, "information technologies for biology".
