Okay, I did a cvs update because I thought that might be causing the
difference.  Now this is what I find for processes running:

Note that the options show I have 1 gnome front and 5 middles running.

Also, shutting down the gnome front did not shut down the middles.  But a kill
to any of the middles kills all 5.
