Hi, I don't know wath is IT (english is not my natural language) but I supose that you are not biologist or related.
Briefly, bioinformatics is needed to analyse genomic data. That is, due to the cheapering of the cost in sequencing, there is a hihg amount of data (DNA sequences) that are not analysed, and a holistic approach is essential to understand biological processes. For that we need powerful algorithms and programs who make this as automatized as possible.
Now yet, bioinformatics is considered the first scientific job in near future, by I think moreover, no biologist can investigate without bioinformatics (by yourself or by an informatics).
Studying bioinformatics is, not essential for future, but essential for today's science.
