Does anybody use the XML output from the NCBI asn2xml tool?

The output XML is huge of which majority is useless whitespace (e.g. 
5GB of ignoreable
whitespace in chromosome 1).

Also, is there a guide to the DTD?  It looks like a transliteration of 
the ASN.1 format
which leads me to the question: is there a guide to the ASN.1 format?
