Dear Kevin, In response to your inquiry about K-12 materials, please see: BioMolecular Explorer 3D (designed for high school level) (soon the Jmol version will be available on CD as well as online) and other materials at http://highschool.molviz.org A key component of BioMolecular Explorer 3D is a tutorial on DNA double helix structure/function. It is not a linear story. Rather, students are encouraged to press buttons in any order to see what happens. What happens depends on what you pressed earlier. This DNA tutorial includes challenge questions designed for three levels: secondary school students, lower level and upper level college students. Answers are available on email request to me. When teachers ask me for the answers, I include the information below about related K-12 resources: ---------------------------------- You may find additional useful resources at the MyDNA website, which supports a course for non-science majors here at UMass. See especially the interactive Flash simulations of electrophoresis of DNA, which convey some fundamental principles of DNA analysis by restriction endonucleases. The course website http://www.bio.umass.edu/biochem/mydna/ has links to "discovery modules" which are interactive "experiment simulators". There are other resources at http://molvis.sdsc.edu/dna/moredna.htm that may be of interest. All of these resources are available through my umbrella site, http://molviz.org. For inexpensive but educational fun, don't miss http://balloonmolecules.com !! Finally, for junior-high students, there is a cool, easy, on-line workalike to DNA fingerprinting here: http://www.moleculesinmotion.com/alphabet_traits/ Sincerely, /* - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Eric Martz, Professor Emeritus, Dept Microbiology U Mass, Amherst -- http://www.umass.edu/molvis/martz Biochem 3D Education Resources http://MolviZ.org See 3D Molecules, Install Nothing! - http://firstglance.jmol.org Protein Explorer - 3D Visualization: http://proteinexplorer.org Workshops: http://workshops.proteinexplorer.org World Index of Molecular Visualization Resources: http://molvisindex.org ConSurf - Find Conserved Patches in Proteins: http://consurf.tau.ac.il Atlas of Macromolecules: http://atlas.proteinexplorer.org PDB Lite Macromolecule Finder: http://pdblite.org Molecular Visualization EMail List (molvis-list): http://bioinformatics.org/mailman/listinfo/molvis-list - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - */
