Minibirch support

Original submission:
I am putting this up as a feature bug to have you (Brian) assess its priority - is it gating? (gating -> preventing 2.8 release) If not, put it at a 5.
My intuition says that it is targeting a small market, and targeting mostly the same userbase as winbirch. See winbirch bug for the other half of this discussion (it seemed appropriate to make a separate bug)

For the time being, there doesn't seem to be a compelling reason to support minibirch, so we'll close this bug.

Minibirch has a small target audience indeed. Really two:
- workshop installs of BIRCH, which we haven't been doing much of
- for developers who want to try out things. Aside from saving disk space, minibirch forces you to only modify things in the local parts of BIRCH.
But it is not at all a show stopper, and should not prevent a 2.8 release.
