[Molvis-list] ADMIN: posting to list by non-members

There has been a recent spate of 'non-members' trying to post to this list in recent weeks, so I thought I would clarify the situation and hopefully head off further problems. ('spate' for this list amounts to about a dozen or so ;-)

Non-members are not allowed to post messages to the mol vis list. Messages are authenticated using the email address of the sender. If the address matches exactly what we have on file, the message will be posted. If not, it will be rejected.

In most cases, this catches spam or other unsolicited messages before they hit the list, which is good.

In some cases, though, 'innocent' users are caught. For example, if you subscribe to the list with the address <foo at bar.edu>, but you try to send from <foo at mail.bar.edu> or <foo at smtp.bar.edu>, your message will be rejected.

If you find your messages to the list being rejected, please verify that your outgoing email account exactly matches your subscribed address. Some mail admins use a different server for outgoing mail; something like smtp.bar.edu is not uncommon. You can usually find this information by looking at your preferences in your email client (for outgoing mail), or by checking the mail headers for messages that you have sent, or by contacting your email administrator.

if you have trouble, feel free to contact me off-list and I will provide whatever help that I can.

many happy returns,

tim
